Serums for Oily Skin and Acne
The serum is a skincare product use after cleansing and toning, as well as before a moisturizer. The liquid or gel product is usually found in a tincture bottle and provides high amounts of certain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), or vitamin C to the skin.
Serums that have hyaluronic acid are hydrating but are great for oily skin as they leave negligible emollient residue. Avoid serums that are intense, oil-based, or contain a lot of botanical seed oils. Serums that contain AHAs can be helpful for oily or acne-prone skin, ”says Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, dermatologist and author of Beyond Soap.
Sometimes the skin is oily because it actually lacks its own natural oil (possibly due to frequent cleansing or peeling) and the body overcompensates for it. Sometimes oily skin is genetic or the result of living in hot or humid climates.
How we decide
· We select these serums based on criteria that we believe are good indicators of quality and safety, at different prices.
· We look for ingredients that have been shown to reduce oiliness and balance acne-prone skin, such as salicylic acid, rosemary, and thyme.
· We consider products that have received awards and certificates and are preferred by dermatologists and our medical review team.
How To Choose A Serum
Avoid ingredients that clog pores. When choosing a serum for fatty or sensitive skin, look at the ingredient list and avoid comedogenic ingredients, such as coconut oil, apricot oil, or avocado oil. Look for non-comedogenic oils and ingredients.
Translate the ingredients so you know what they are. You can search for unknown ingredients in the Skin Deep EWG database.
Use search filters and tools that focus on certified ingredients. If you are only interested in certified non-toxic ingredients, you can filter products on some shopping sites using a tool like "Clean at Sephora."
How To Use
Here are some suggested steps to add serum to your daily skincare routine.
After purification or washing your face, use a toner if it is part of your routine.
Apply serum to slightly damp skin and pat gently.
Follow with a moisturizer or facial oil that can help the serum go through the skin.
You can utilize it in the morning or in the evening, but if you use it during the day, be sure to follow up with a mineral sunscreen. If you are using a chemical sunscreen, apply it first before any serum or moisturizer.
You can also use the serum as an on-site treatment, applying it only to areas that become oily or acne-prone.
